Need Dog advice.

My 5 year old son was gifted a pitbull a few months ago. Unfortunately we had to move from a house to an apartment and we can no longer provide a comfortable home for our 7 month old Red Nose pitbull. Toko (the dog) is very friendly and has never given us any problems. He has been neutered and is up to date on his shots.. I was thinking of taking him to the animal shelter but heard that he would be put down solely due to the fact that he's a pitbull. I need help. What should I do, I don't have any relatives in this area and feel like my hands are tied. Anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone know if the animal shelter would in fact put out dog down?
