5 Things You Need to Know About Watsonville: Midweek Edition

New wine tasting venue, kids swim race and more.

With the Fourth of July over, it's a long stretch of sunny, summer days until school starts back up in mid-August. It definitely feels like vacation time out there, but there's still plenty going on in town. Here are a few news snippets to keep you informed.

A new winery is opening on the north end of town.

Mica Cellars will offer wine tasting on Saturday afternoons at 18C Hangar Way, just off Airport Boulevard.

It will be the second tasting room in the city.  at its Harvest Drive studio this summer.

Kids can race in Friday afternoon at the Watsonville Family YMCA on Sudden Street. The 4 p.m. event, hosted by the Piranhas swim team, is for youth ages 6-18 who can swim at least one lap (25 meters) without stopping. Come by and get wet!

Ag production again set a record in Santa Cruz County, the Register Pajaronian newspaper reported. The 2010 figures were released at the end of June by the county Agriculture Commissioner.

The county produced more than $532 million in crops, more than half of which was strawberries, Watsonville's famous fruit. Nearly 130,000 tons of the berries were grown in the county last year.

For those who follow it, there are no school board meetings the month. The Pajaro Valley Board of Trustees resumes its regular twice-a-month schedule in August.

The beloved is leaving its namesake street for a Main Street location, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported this week.

The longtime eatery at Penny Lane and Green Valley Road (technically, it has a Penny Lane address) has hit hard times and the move should save thousands in rent each month. The doors will close July 16. It's new dining room opens Aug. 1 at 972 Main St.
