Five Summer Events You Won't Want to Miss

From food festivals to parades, there's a lot going on in Watsonville in the coming weeks.

Where/When: Wed., June 20, 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Portuguese Hall, located at 124 Atkinson Ln.

What: Hosted by the Watsonville and Freedom Rotary clubs, the event features a dinner and live and silent auction. All proceeds go to support Rotary charity work in Peru.

Where/When: Sat., June 23, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., , 27 Sudden St.

What: Support the local Y while picking up a tasty BBQ chicken lunch or dinner.

Cost: $10

Where/When: Sat. June 23, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., , 10 Werner Rd.

What: Enjoy tamales traditional to many regions of Mexico and Central America, authentic Pozole (hominy and chile stew), live Oaxacan music, farm worker stories, crafts, and more. Proceeds from the event benefit the Center for Farmworker Families and the Springfield Community Grange.

Spirit of Watsonville Celebration
When: Wed., July 4, 2-5 p.m., W. Beach Street & Main Street.

What: Celebrate Independence Day and Watsonville’s 161st birthday through downtown festivities such as a parade and BBQ. Stick around for nighttime fireworks, or set off your own: they’re on sale July 1 through 4.

Cost: Free

Watsonville Strawberry Festival
When: Aug. 4 and 5, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., historic downtown Watsonville.

What: Pay homage to Watsonville’s juciest fruit through this giant summer festival, filled with live entertainment, carnival rides and of course shortcake and other sweet samples.
