How to Stay Safe (While Having Fun) on July 4

Tricks and tips for manning fireworks.

Firework sales in Watsonville through the end of today, attracting those from Santa Cruz County and beyond looking for an unofficial show. Yet there are many dangers involved, as the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department pointed out earlier this week by blowing up a cantaloupe. The following are additional tips for having fun while keeping the fire engines away.

•Choose fireworks that are legal, and clearly labeled as consumer fireworks. Illegal fireworks have often been unpacked, and wrapped in brown paper.
•When you light fireworks, stay at least 200 feet away from buildings, and a safe distance from anything that can catch on fire.
•Only adults should light fireworks, and use only one firework at a time.
•Light fireworks at the side, and quickly move out of the way.
•Keep a water hose and, if possible, a fire extinguisher nearby.
•Soak all fireworks in a bucket before throwing them away to prevent trash fires.
