The 4.9-acre Pajaro Neighborhood Park is being erected on the site of the former Granite Construction equipment yard at 24 San Juan Rd.

It's a joint effort between the County of Monterey, Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District, Together in Pajaro (TIP), community residents and various business and community leaders.

Those involved in the planning process said the park is "much needed and a great example of what communities can do when joining together."

Pajaro Neighborhood Park will have a plaza area with a quiosco (bandstand) for community events, a synthetic turf field for baseball and soccer, asphalt running/walking track, basketball/volleyball court, two separate play areas—one for 5- to 12-year-old children and one for 2- to 5-year-old children—a mural to be created by local school children and picnic areas.

SSA Landscape Architects designed the park and the Pavex Construction Division of Graniterock will construct it.

The park will be built with $1.2 million in former Redevelopment Agency funds and a $5 million grant from the state Department of Parks and Recreation. The commitment to build the park superseded the sunset of the redevelopment agencies.

Funding for the park's ongoing operations will be covered by donations. Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District will oversee day-to-day activities there.

There will be a public celebration and groundbreaking ceremony for the Pajaro Neighborhood Park at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6.

Volunteer with Together in Pajaro or make a donation toward the park construction by calling the Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District at 831-722-1389. The office is at located at 136 San Juan Rd.
