Seniors-Only Dance Party Celebrates Cinco De Mayo

The event at the Springfield Grange may become a regular gathering for the older generation.

Singing, dancing, a delicious potluck of traditional food for Cinco de Mayo. Sounds like a great party, right?

Well, check your ID. Only those 45 and older are welcome at the first Senior Dance at the .

Maria Alejo decided to organize the event to mark the holiday and build community among Watsonville's older generation.

Weekdays, , where there is an hour of dancing, as well as classes they can enroll in. But Alejo said some don't care for the food. Plus, it's only Monday through Friday.

"They tell me they have nothing to do in Saturday and Sunday," Alejo said.

So Alejo is organizing the first Senior Dance at the recently revitalized Springfield Grange, at the corner of Elkhorn and Werner road in Royal Oaks. The event will include a potluck and DJ, but no alcohol or children.

Alejo said already 25 people from the have signed up to attend the event.

"It's a good time to socialize with other seniors," Alejo said.

Cost is $5, plus a plate of something to share. The meal will take up the first hour of the event, followed by a dance performance and lots of music.

Attendees may dress for the occasion, and anyone driving a senior to the dance and back can stay, regardless of age. Otherwise, the age requirement is 45—Alejo said some ladies in their 50s have younger boyfriends, and she wanted to include them.
