SmoQe BBQ in Aptos Closed its Doors Sunday

Customers paid in cash for a last chance at what was left: brisket, pulled pork, cole slaw and salads.

Despite winning chilis in October's Santa Cruz Chili Cookoff, SmoQe BBQ in Aptos closed its doors Sunday night.

One of the last remaining chefs said the 3-year-old restaurant lost too much in its first year—some $200,000—to make it up despite its recent successes. He said he hoped to find a way to reopen the restaurant which served wood-fired pizza as well as barbeque.

It October's Sausage Festival in Santa Cruz's Westside and had lines out the door on weekends and week nights. It also Aracelly Clouse as a place that was perfect for meat eaters and vegetarians.

Try Aptos BBQ, very tasty smoked meat. However, not vegetarian friendly. Some advice to the owners of Smoqe for next time: Pick a location with better parking Have table service instead of making people stand outside waiting Treat your employees with respect. Bouncing checks repeatedly is not cool. Try to be consistent with the type of wood you smoke with, several times things tasted off. Try to get the same cuts/quality of meat. The brisket varied from week to week. Overall sorry to see it go, I wish they could have gotten it together!

Aptos St. Barbeque is awesome. I had the pulled pork and tri tip sandwiches and they were delicious. Can't go wrong at this place!
