Tell Us: What Makes a Good Neighbor?

National Good Neighbor Day is today, Sept. 28. Share your stories about the neighbors who make your town a great place to live.

A good neighbor comes in many forms.

It may be someone who keeps an eye on your kids when they’re playing outside or someone who pet sits for you when your family is on vacation. Some even go above and beyond to make your community a great place to live by picking up trash in neighborhood parks or volunteering to start youth programs at the local library.

Celebrate the people who make your community thrive by honoring them on National Good Neighbor Day today.

The concept of National Good Neighbor Day began in the early 1970s when Montana resident Becky Mattson pushed to create a holiday that would recognize people who make their neighborhoods a great place to live.

The annual event became a National Holiday in 2003 when Sen. Max Baucus sponsored resolution naming Sept. 28 National Good Neighbor Day.

Are there people in your community who exemplify being a good neighbor? Today is a good time to tell them that you—and the entire neighborhood—appreciate all they do.

TELL US: Who are the great neighbors in your town? Who makes your town a great place to live? Honor them by sharing your story in the comments section below.

Based on what my family and I have found in the three months that we have lived here a strong drug lord with many lookouts and runners seems to be at the center of the neighborhood. Gangs and gun shots at all hours of the day and night seem to keep people on their toes. We have been broken into four times so they seem to like to visit us when we are not home but they do tend to borrow or TV and computers each time they stop by and never return them. We hope to move soon.

Wow - not sure where you two live, but it can't be near my neighborhood! I have called Watsonville home since 1983. I have raised two wonderful daughters here, helped found a high school, participate in many great community events, enjoy the diversity of cultural and historic offerings and met life long friends. Some of my neighbors have changed over the years, for a variety of reasons, but we all look out for one another and take pride in our neighborhood.

How make you a cop?
Watzon McWats September 28, 2012 at 08:58 pm
I don't ask much. Turn down the music between 10pm-8am or so (be as loud as you want outside of that as long as it's not a daily thing, I don't care too much, I'm loud myself). Some warning before you throw a massive party with DJs and portapoties in the front yard would be nice, but whatever. If you MUST push a shopping cart home instead of buying one for $20 at Mi Pueblo or putting some baskets on your bike, return it within an hour or two and don't leave it in the street or on other people's lawns. Tuck it up on your porch until you're ready to roll again. Don't liter. Don't leave your pets in the street - ever. Don't leave um in the back yard when you're not at home if they tend to bark, and when you're home bring them inside within a minute or two if they start barking. Park somewhere other than smack dab in the front of my house blocking both spots if you can avoid it - I don't like hearing that my wife had to walk a block down a dark street at night. If your house contributes more than one or two cars to street parking, consider moving to a neighborhood that isn't full of one car driveways and tiny garages. Don't drive drunk down my street, and certainly don't park drunk in front of my house (phew, I'm glad those people moved!).
Anything else is gravy. I complain a lot about my neighbors, but I actually do have a few GREAT ones - better than anywhere else I've ever lived. We share produce, keep an eye on each others homes, invite each other over for BBQs, etc.

This is the kind a stuff that makes people mad. How are you to say what me and my friend can and can not do. It is a free country.

We are working on making Hill safer. If your by palm come by and we can chat. and maria you need to stop . your hatred is disgusting and you need to chill out. your racist remarks and attitude are not warranted. you rush to judge people but yet you don't see that your harassment and hypocritical thinking and attitude really suck. its people like you that cause wars and issues that shouldn't be there. you have called me a racist on everything i post. you wont be apart of the solution because people like you are the problem. we all get your so proud to be a brown beret and so proud to be Mexican. go the hell back to Mexico if your so proud and hate Americans so much. dont forget its because of people like me that you have your freedom of speech and to be in whatever group you like. but when you take advantage of it , it is an embarrassment to not only yourself but to your family and kids. i feel sorry for you. that you are so caught up with hate and anti Americanism that it runs your life. i have 2 tips for you- 1st is to realize this is AMERICAN NOT MEXICO, if you love Mexico so much go home. 2nd is love GOD and love yourself and stop hating everyone.
This is all my opinion, im not chewing your ass cause your Latino, im chewing it cause your just a rotten apple in the city who is part of the problem, and i feel horrible that your so narrow minded and stupid. i thought you were just ignorant but it seems you just dont know better and plain stupid.
Watzon McWats September 28, 2012 at 10:21 pm
It is a free country, and I respect and appreciate that. That's one reason why I for instance, don't really care if someone is loud during the day once in a while, or parks in front of my house if there is no where else to park. But there is also common courtesy. I have three different neighbors that bring shopping carts all the time and without fail, leave them in front of other people's homes and never return them - that's a jerk move. There are also laws in place that cover some of what I mentioned. It's illegal to drive drunk, have loud parties at night, litter, and steal shopping carts. It's a free country, but it's not a free for all.
Watzon McWats September 28, 2012 at 10:24 pm
If there's something in specific that I said that bothered you, I'd love to hear it and why you think it's okay to do that. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm open to hearing your side and actually would really love to better understand why people in my neighborhood do some of those things.
Paul Gutierrez September 28, 2012 at 10:28 pm
Maria refer to comment above. Ur the problem not us. And it's not a race or cause ur Latino it's cause you blind and stupid.
HizDesign September 28, 2012 at 10:33 pm
Watzon, sure sounds a lot like my neighborhood.

HizDesign September 28, 2012 at 10:49 pm
And all this time I thought I was just "here a few blocks from (what used to be called) downtown!" lol
Sergio September 29, 2012 at 01:08 am
Sounds so much like my neighborhood.
Longtime local gal September 29, 2012 at 07:48 pm
Tou-Shay; good comment. Slightly snarky but not really negative. Hit the nail on the head of some of my neighborhood peeves. I too have some really great neighbors and some whom I wish would move somewhere more suited to their our-music-is-your-music-is-your-party living. Try to put out in order to receive good karma

I'd like to have more info about this. I'm thinking of "bundling" my telephone land line,Read More internet, and HGTV with Charter, BUT if they practice censorhsip, I might reconsider. Any more info would be appreciated...what websites are being blocked?
Butch Cole June 16, 2013 at 01:32 am
I'd like more information also..I have Charter now and can't remember getting notification that theyRead More are blocking sites.
Earl Pickles June 16, 2013 at 10:40 pm
Doubtful that notification would be given. Sites that are most troublesome for Charter are thoseRead More available for downloading copyrighted material. This is not to say that Charter is a bad ISP for it is a relative fast, moderately priced, reliable service in this area. I would suggest however that you do not lease the required equipment from them but purchase your own. If you are interested in finding out more about Charter and other ISPs blocking sites, information is available on the Internet.

From emergency dispatchers: the white four-door sedan had flames coming from the engine compartment.Read More It was on the off-ramp from southbound Highway 1 near Rampart. The car was fully engulfed and the flames spread into the surrounding vegetation a bit, but firefighters only needed a couple of minutes to knock down the fire.
