Buddhist Temple Hanamatsuri Festival

Watsonville Buddhist Temple will be celebrating its Sunday, April 15 to celebrate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha.The family event is free to the public and will include exhibits, art and cultural information, demonstrations and Japanese food.  

The festival will take place at the Watsonville Buddhist Temple from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.The event will feature displays of bonsai and Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement. school of Ikenobo) along with colorful floral bouquets, donated by local nurseries, growers and florists. Photo albums chronicling the temple’s history, Kimekomi Doll display, student exhibits from Kokoro no Gakko (a Japanese cultural summer school program) and  Boy Scout Troop 558 will be on display as well.

A variety of delicious Japanese food will be provided, including sushi, teriyaki chicken, manju (Japanese confection), cabbage salad, baked goods and farm-fresh produce.A special Hanamatsuri service will be held in the Temple’s hondo (chapel) from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  The service is open to the public.  At 11:15 a.m. there will be a temple tour.

Demonstrations and performances will include Tae Kwan Do Martial Arts Demonstration, Marino Kai -New Age Koto (a Japanese instrumental performance)  and Bando Hirohichiro Kyo No Kai  (Japanese Classical Dance) from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Watsonville Buddhist Temple is located at 423 Bridge Street.  For information, call the temple office at 724-7860.
