Explore Monterey's Colton Hall Museum

The Colton Hall Museum in Monterey was built as a schoolhouse and once served as the capitol building for Alta, California. California statehood was decided upon at the Hall in 1849, and the first California constitution was drafted there. Colton Hall now offers visitors a re-creation of the meeting room where California's first Constitution was drafted in October 1849 and exhibits on early Monterey. You can visit the museum daily from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
