Grab and Go Kids Planner: Kites, Farms and Artichokes

High-flying kites, a day on the farm, Castroville's Artichoke Festival, three-for-one museum visits and the summer season kickoff at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk are our suggestions for this week's kids planner.

Where/When: 225 Sudden St, Watsonville, CA 95076 (at the , Wednesday, 4-6 p.m. 

Why Go: Haven't you always wondered what's the trick behind getting a kite to go high into the air? And what shape or kind of kite you need to make that happen? Let your child go and find out while learning how to design and build a high-flying kite. This program is best for kids ages 7 to 16.

Where/When: , 2601 E Lake Ave., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Why Go: This is a day-long event put on by the Agricultural History Museum to celebrate the agricultural past. There will be hayrides, sheep-shearing, butter-churning, spinning, blacksmith demos, and hay baling. You and your kids can lern about the past in a very hands-on way. Plenty of animals around to see and pet, too. Also on the program are a Tractor Rodeo using AHP’s antique tractors (or you can bring your own). You might also get a chance to line drive a single or team of Clydesdale horses in the hay field, with an experienced teamster by your side. will be with the driver at all times. Food will provided by the Santa Cruz County Fair Heritage Foundation and will include a takeout tri-tip dinner after 4 PM. If any one would be like to enter any of these events, please call the AHP office at 831-724-5898

Where/When: downtown Castroville, Saturday, 10 a.m. go 6 p.m., Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Need you ask?  This is the 52nd annual artichoke festival. There's something for everyone here, especially Sunday when it comes to the kids and the parade kicks off at 9:45 a.m. But both days there is plenty for all, cooking, music, kids activities galore, music, arts and crafts and of course, food.

Pricing: $10 for adults and $5 for children at the gate

Where/When:  , 1305 E Cliff Dr, Santa Cruz; The Museum of Art and History, 705 Front St., Santa Cruz, Seymour Marine Discovery Center, 190 Shaffer Ave., Santa Cruz; Saturday, Sunday (except for the Museum of Natural History, which is closed Sunday).

Why Go: What a deal! Pay to enter one museum, and get admission to two others. Each of the museums will offer free admission to visitors who pay for an admission at any of the museum. Each will accept the others' membership cards. Treat you and your family to a day or weekend of fun and learning.

Pricing: $2 to $6

Where/When: , 400 Beach St, Santa Cruz, Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. 

Why Go: This is the kick-off event for the boardwalk's 2011 summer season with a preview of what's to come. The lineup includes a performance by Cirque Polynesian at 1 p.m., Skydivers land on Main Beach at 5-5:30 p.m. you get the Famiy Stone concert featuring Jerry Martini and Cynthia Robinson, original founding members of Sly & The Family Stone. On Sunday, the Cirque Polynesian will offer repeat performances at 1-3 p.m.
