Best of Winner: Freedom Meat Locker

The beloved butcher shop won 33 percent of the vote in the Patch "Best Of" sandwich contest.

Watsonville may be a taqueria town, but Patch readers definitely have their favorite sandwich shops.

In our , 108 voters cast their ballots for the restaurant that has the tastiest sandwiches, lowest prices and best ingredients.

Receiving 36 votes in the contest, the butcher shop and deli offers sandwiches and prime cuts of meat. It's open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday; the deli opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. The business is closed Sunday and Monday.

Freedom Meat Lockers beat Patch to the punchline and announced its win on its Facebook page just after 10 a.m. Friday. Immediately, customers chimed in with congratulations and comments.

Scott Akimoto said "That's awesome!!!! But we knew you'd win!!! Cause you are the best!!!!"

Betty Weaver Campbell posted "of course you won...you are the best....congrats!!!!"

Freedom Meat Locker is family-owned and operated since 1970, and there's quite a buzz about the business around town. Weekly, they give away a prize pack of their favorite meats, like tri-tip and sausage, to supportive Facebook fans.

Last year, the owners suspect Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg brought a slaughtered hog to the butcher shop in the back of a Lexus during Zuckerberg's quest to only eat meat he killed himself.

Congrats to Freedom Meat Locker on getting first place for your sandwiches. They are truly delicious and a good value. Also the best meat market in the region!
