5 Things to Know About Watsonville: Aug. 16

Mosquito spraying again and the Watsonville Fire Department is "filling the boot" today and Wednesday.

There will be low-flying choppers over about 45 acres of marshland around Watsonville today, or Wednesday, or Thursday.

The county Mosquito and Vector Control will be erradicating mosquitos one of those days this week. The actual day of the application is weather-dependant.

The granular treatment will be focused on Watsonville Slough, Atkinson Pond, Pinto Lake, Harkins Slough and Struve Slough. The aim is to reduce mosquito breeding in the wetlands.

The low-flying helicopter shouldn't take long to hit all those areas, according to Mosquito and Vector Control supervisor Paul Binding. Also, he noted that this is not an aerial fogging or air-dispersed application, and it's not harmful to humans, birds or other wildlife.

Watsonville firefighters will be asking city residents to help them help others today and Wednesday.

Watsonville, Local 1272 Firefighters will be hosting a "Fill the Boot" event at Main Street and Ohlone Parkway to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). They will be collecting money from local drivers and pedestrians to benefit MDA.
