Bike Shack Offers Helping Hand at Farmers' Market

Fix your bike and pick up fresh produce in one convenient location.

Does your bike need a tune up? A new tire? A little TLC? If so, swing by the Watsonville Certified Farmers' Market any Friday from 4-7 p.m. for some bike mechanics 101. The Bike Shack, a nonprofit organization run by the Watsonville Brown Berets, sets up its bike mechanic station at the market every week, ready to assist the mechanically challenged masses.

The Bike Shack functions as an outreach program designed to help the people of the Watsonville community get around and get healthy. At its market booth, the Bike Shack mechanics help people fix their bikes, give people lessons on bike mechanics and even give away a bike every once in a while. The Bike Shack promotes an active and healthy alternative to gas-powered transportation and seeks to empower the community through low and no-cost mechanical education and assistance. The Bike Shack accepts donations of money, bikes and bike parts, tools or volunteer time.

After the folks at the Bike Shack help you get your bike running smooth, you can ride around the produce stalls and pick up some fresh fruits and veggies for the trip home. Citrus fruits are still going strong. Winter greens, cabbage and lettuces are available. Roots like beets, carrots, potatoes, yams and radishes are also abundant. And don’t forget to pick up some fresh flowers to brighten up your table.
