UPDATED: Fisherman Lost Overboard Near Moss Landing

The Coast Guard is searching for the man, who went missing from the boat near Moss Landing on Tuesday morning.

Updated, 10 p.m. Tuesday: U.S. Coast Guard officials suspended a daylong search tonight for a 42-year-old fisherman who was reported missing by his fellow crew members Tuesday morning.

The man is believed to have gone overboard sometime around 6:30 a.m. His fellow boaters reported that they hadn't seen him since they were 12 miles from Moss Landing, Coast Guard Station Monterey Executive Officer John Suckow said.

The Coast Guard searched the water within a 10-mile radius of where he was last seen was. The search involved as many as two motor lifeboats, an 87-foot cutter and helicopters, Suckow said.

The three other fishermen on board assisted in the search Tuesday, Suckow said.

Suckow said it appears that the fishing boat left Monterey and made a port call in Moss Landing early this morning before the fisherman went missing.

Earlier Tuesday, Suckow said the missing fisherman was wearing bright orange rain gear, which makes the situation more "hopeful."

However, the missing man had not been spotted as of 8:37 p.m. when the search was suspended, Lt. Junior Grade Liezl Nicholas said.

Original story, 3:50 p.m. Tuesday: A 42-year-old man was reported missing Tuesday morning when his fellow crew members could not find him on their fishing boat off the coast of Moss Landing, a U.S. Coast Guard official said.

The missing fisherman was wearing bright orange rain gear, which makes the situation more "hopeful," Suckow said. He added that there was good visibility Tuesday.

Suckow said it appears that the fishing boat left Monterey and made a port call in Moss Landing early this morning before the fisherman went missing.

He advised boaters, "We always recommend wearing life vests."
