Crime Briefs: Accused Child Molester in Court

Also, alleged gang members accused of killing a man for a gang initiation were in court.

Jury Trial Pending for Accused Child Molester

A La Selva Beach man arrested last summer after  was in court Tuesday to set a trial date.

The case against Randy Jay Smith, who was 56 when he was arrested in August, was delayed because the prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Steve Moore, said he is waiting on out-of-county subpoenas.

Smith has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony sex offenses related to two of the girl, who were younger than 10 when the alleged incidents occurred. The statute of limitations expired for other victims, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Smith will return to court July 12 to set the trial date, possibly for later in the summer. Smith is free on bail.

Gunshot Murder Trial Will Be In 2013

Three men who were arrested for a gang-motivated homicide after  will have their trial rescheduled, but a new date hasn't been selected yet.

Jose Meza, Angel Antonio Moreno Torres and Joel Sanchez have pleaded not guilty to killing Richard Eddie Campos, 21, in September 2009. 

The men were in court Tuesday to talk about the trial. They were supposed go on trial Sept. 17, but that date will be rescheduled to sometime in early 2013. The men will be back in court June 28 to select a trial date.

All three remain in County Jail.
