Crunchy Corn on the Cob

Yellow, white, bi-color, organic—there are so many corn varieties to choose from!

As summer marches on, the season continues to prove itself to best time of year for produce. This week, gather up some crunchy fresh ears of summer-ripe corn at the Watsonville Certified Farmers Market.

Native to the Americas, corn, otherwise known as maize, has been an American food staple since before Europeans ever set foot on the continent. Brought back by early explorers, corn quickly spread through Europe and has become a food staple all over the world.

Although corn comes in more varieties than you can shake a stick at, the most popular varieties of corn on the cob are sweet yellow, white or bi-colored. These varieties, often spotted at family barbeques and picnics, can all be found at the Watsonville Certified Farmers Market.

Find yellow and white corn varieties at Agular Farms stand. KT Farms is the place for bi-color corn. If organic corn is the type you desire, stop over at Universal Organics farm stand for some crisp organic white corn. And if you just have to have a corn on the cob right there and then, swing over to Noe’s Churros, in the prepared foods section, to get corn on a stick!

Corn on the cob can be grilled, boiled, baked or steamed. Add a little butter, salt and pepper, and you’re all set. No fire source? Luckily, you can enjoy corn on the cob raw for an extra crunch! Corn is wonderful in salsa, chili, salads, casseroles, and breads. This healthy and versatile treat is a summer gem!

Also at the market this week: broccoli, cauliflower, green and yellow beans, cabbage, carrots, peas, potatoes, tomatoes and so much more!

Shopping at the farmers market is a wonderful way to connect with your community, support local farmers, and eat seasonally.

The Watsonville Certified Farmers Market is held 3-7:30 p.m. every Friday on the corner of Peck and Main streets. The market is open rain or shine.
