Letter to the Editor: Land Trust Nixes Measure T

The annexation special election is the hottest topic in Watsonville right now.

The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County Board of Trustees unanimously voted at its April 26 meeting to oppose Measure T, the Watsonville ballot measure that could lead to the annexation of 95 acres of prime farmland into the city.

The Board cited the Land Trust’s mission to preserve open space and protect the county’s unique agricultural economy.

“We support Measure U,” said Terry Corwin, the Land Trust’s Executive Director, referring to the 2002 ballot measure that protected farmland on the outskirts of Watsonville until 2022.

Corwin said the Land Trust has protected more than 1,250 acres of farmland in the Pajaro Valley in the past five years, including land near the city limits.
