Vehicle Fire Wreaks Havoc on Highway 1 Traffic

The fire was reported at 12:30 p.m. in Aptos; traffic backed up for miles.

A vehicle fire created a commuting nightmare on Highway 1 in Aptos on Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle caught fire on the shoulder of the northbound lanes around 12:30 p.m., causing a brief, partial closure of lanes while fire crews doused the flames. The highway fully reopened an hour later, according to KSBW.

But traffic—especially for northbound drivers—was terrible for hours.

KSBW reported that vehicle engulfed with flames was a van, but as the smoke cleared, it appeared it was a truck with a camper top or a small RV.
