What is the 'American Dream' Today?

DisPatches will explore what the American Dream means locally in modern society. Tell us what you think.

We're excited to inaugurate a new series for our Patch Readers: "DisPatches: The Changing American Dream."

Every day, the national media is full of stories about how American families, businesses and neighbors are adjusting to these trying times. There are so many changes happening so fast that it's dizzying: national debates about unemployment, foreclosures, debt, religion, government and private enterprise all touch on fundamental ways in which we see ourselves and our communities. At Patch, we want to explore that conversation on a daily basis so we can better understand how our neighbors are adjusting to the challenges and opportunities that surround us.

We don't think there's one American Dream, but a multitude of American Dreams which a multitude of people are working toward. Looking out across nearly almost 900 Patch sites, we see businesses holding their breath deciding whether to expand; college graduates returning home because they can't find jobs; and senior citizens bringing boarders into their homes to help pay their bills. We also see bold new volunteer efforts, inspiring stories of local businesses that succeed because they innovated, and locals who've taken these trying times as a signal to engage more, not less, in their government.

At the purely local level, we want to know where we, as Watsonville neighbors, fit along these fault lines.

Nationally, the federal government is struggling to solve a seemingly unsolvable monetary issue. Locally, Watsonville has been grappling with and .

Nationally, there's a debate about the education system, which is at the center of our dreams of a better life for our children. Locally, .

"DisPatches" will be built upon the compelling vignettes and snapshots we unearth across all of our Patch sites.

And, of course, we want your help: Tell us what issues and what stories in Watsonville go to the heart of your American Dream.

To share you stories, send us an email at jennifer.squires@patch.com, or tell us in the comments.

@thomas martinez ... ' You have created a ghost like the "Brown Berets" to blame all yourRead More troubles on. A group of young brown kids who fix bikes? wow, how scary. Well since now you have all these opinions, ...' --------------------------------------------------------- thomas, how much research have you done with regard to the brown berets? If you ever try to google 'brown berets,' you will see that fixing bikes is not the main purpose mentioned on those sites ... maybe they do a modicum of that in Watsonville but it is not their main purpose in helping our youth. When they incite students to walk out of classes and to cause havoc in the streets and freeway, that is not a positive action for educating our young people. The main purpose of the website for bbs is negative support for our law enforcement and our military ... both of which are the boon of everyone's safety. And the brown fist raised with an angry attitude is not condusive to a peaceful and supportive action for this community. Strange how the non hispanics are always the ones labeled 'racist.' Why not just get off your 'empowerment for brown' and get with 'empowerment for all humankind.' If we are to live together then maybe we have to learn to respect one another's rights and person. Also ... NO on T ... we need fresh air and fresh land to keep breathing ...
