Who Is the Watsonville Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Barack Obama their person of the year. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Barack Obama as their Person of the Year.

“For finding and forging a new majority, for turning weakness into opportunity and for seeking, amid great adversity, to create a more perfect union, Barack Obama is TIME's 2012 Person of the Year,” Time managing editor Richard Stengel explained in his note to readers.

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Watsonville’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse?”

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

I nominate former city councilman Emilio Martinez for Watsonville's Person of the Year. Emilio has been instrumental in exposing the cronyism and downright corruption that has for some time plagued our city council as well as the overall local political process; the plague which has now moved up to our local state leadership, and which continues to trickle back down to Watsonville. Emilio has also exposed a number of cases of mismanagement and coverup on the part of some of our city leaders. I hope Emilio continues his investigative process and continues to expose the lies and shenanigans until some changes are effected. And long live Emilio's blog, "Watsonville Fishing Report".

The Watsonville Brown Berets are the only choice. They have worked for years to end racism and have fought for the rights of all Mexicano/a's. In addition the have kept ICE out of the community. The Brown Berets operate the bike shack and the farmers market. We will be very happy when we win this award.

I second the nomination of Luis Alejo and his Brown Berets. Beyond a doubt they are the biggest news makers in Watsonville in 2012.

Luis Alejo and the Brown Berets.

Beyond a doubt it has to be Luis Alejo and his Brown Berets.

The Brown Berets operate the Farmers' Market?
David H. Perez December 28, 2012 at 06:09 AM
@HizDesign - If that's the case, we should take our business to the Cabrillo College Farmers' Market in Aptos - it is a much better farmers' market anyway.

They do want to rename Watsonville to Aztecka or Alejo.

OMG Ummmmm are you for REAL under educated bb you are? Question was PERSON OF THE YEAR... not gang of the year. And since when did the BB have the farmers market. The BB is the most racist gang around. BB are losing steam in Watsonville... or haven't you noticed. MEXICAN rights? Haven't seen that in our laws. It isn't needed as the laws are set for AMERICAN'S. Are you a citizen? Randy... having a great morning laugh at this post.
randy December 28, 2012 at 02:54 PM
Carlos... Biggest TROUBLE makers is what they are. BTW.. true bb don't talk bb in public. Isn 't that the code of conduct?

Man of the year would be a toss up between Chief of Police Manny Solano and Emilio Martinez. Manny has lead his "troops" on a tight budget and had to put up with the rules and regulations set up by Carlos and his group. Emilio has brought out in the open all the crude that the City Council and City Manager have inflicted on this city. Woman of the year. Nancy Bilicich. She has stayed true to her beliefs. You go Nancy. Randy thinking that some of our youths are BRAIN WASHED.

I never cease to get a kick out of reading the many comments on the Patch. @David: Cathy was going to see about circulating a petition, should Nancy B not be given her much-deserved position as Mayor. I'd like to hear about that petition (and definitely sign it) should Cathy really get one going. If she, for any reason, can't do it, I'd also like to know that. I'll be happy to do so as well :) Happy New Year to all of you!

The Brown Berets and Mr. Alejo are the top contenders for this honer. They have kept the peace with the gangs where the cops could not. They act as teachers in local schools when the school is like out of money and stuff. They put on the farmers market and the whole bike shack thing giving Mexicano youths a job where the white stores won't. The Brown Berets also go out into the hoods and set trouble makers like the Take Back Watsonville guy straight and if needed run them out of town. We love the Brown Berets and they are the only one deserving of this award.

@HizDesign: Happy New Year! Yes, I will be working on this project starting in January. I am contacting some of the people who have tried before to get their best ideas. We will not fail this time! If anyone else in interested, send me a message via my Patch account and I'll keep you in the loop.

No doubt that Watsonville Chief Manny Solano is person of the year!
