Community Corner

Second Saturdays On The Farm

Agricultural History Project’s next Second Saturday On The Farm with BBQ and Ranching is August 10, 11am – 3pm at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, Highway 152 outside Watsonville. This event is FREE! Donations appreciated.

Second Saturdays on the Farm, held every month, offer a chance to be with a great community, and experience a little of the history of farming.  Each month focuses on a different aspect of the farming experience and explores the history as well as activities for kids and adults related to each topic.

This August 10th Second Saturday features a Bucking Bull to ride – a wild ride for adults and a gentle one for kids!

At 12pm – 1pm we’ll offer lunch of hot off the grill BBQ Tri-Tip with beans, salad, and garlic bread for $10 and hot dogs and beans for $5.  And you can take a hayride out to look at this year’s new Community Garden and see how the corn you planted at Day on the Farm in May is coming along.

Activities for kids will be ongoing 11am – 3pm.  They can try out rope making, steer roping, bull-riding, painting, and can race our ride-on toy tractors!  We’ll also have a steer and two calves visiting.

Talks will be at 1pm – 2pm by Frank Estrada and John Pisturino, local ranchers will discuss trends; and Gordon Clauson, Instructor for Cal Poly’s Ranch and Swanton.  Exhibits will include meat cuts and how to dry meats.

“Second Saturdays are a monthly event for our community to come together around farming and also with our partners to experience the best of the Pajaro Valley cultural community” said John Kegebein, CEO of the Agricultural History Project Center and Museum.

Second Saturday partners include the Watsonville Fire Fighters Museum, Freedom Meat Lockers, 4-H, Sierra Azul and Gizdich Ranch to create a fun day of family activities in the Pajaro Valley.  We are continuing to add partners to highlight the breadth of entertainment, art, education, and cultural available to families in our area.

Second Saturday On The Farm September 14th will feature Yesterday’s Farm, our contribution to the Santa Cruz County Fair experience.
