Some Gigs Are Worth the Wait

This Sunday, Americana songwriters Michael Gaither, Laurie Jennings and Dana Keller play the Corralitos Cultural Center.

Sometimes, it just takes a long time for a show with specific people to come together. A couple of years back, I almost did a night up at Don Quixote's in Felton with the Florida duo of Laurie Jennings and Dana Keller. They have quite the pedigree:

Laurie's background includes theater training in New York, and many years running, her own acoustic music venue in Florida, where she met Dana. Dana's an equally impressive songwriter, and as a dobro player, he's shared the stage with the likes of Vince Gill, Steve Wonder and Ricky Skaggs.

But I digress. Our show back then didn't happen, but I knew that this music circle is pretty small, even when it spans both coasts. When I learned that the circle included some very special pals, including Jay Howlett and the late Chuck McCabe, I figured it was just a matter of time. We did finally meet in person last summer. I interviewed them for my podcast, "Songs and Stories." And we vowed to do a show together when they came back.

Now they're back. They've been playing up and down the coast and, most recently, did a live set on Radio's Sunday morning show, "Please Stand By." Our show together is Sunday out at our series at the . We're basically going to spend the night taking turns playing songs and accompanying each other on harmony, harmonica, percussion, Dana on dobro, and anything else we can think of. The intimacy of the center is also a perfect place for talking about where songs come from. Hope you can join us.

The Corralitos Cultural Center is at 127 Hames Rd. in Watsonville. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Show runs from 6-9 p.m. Suggested donation (sliding scale) is $10-$20. (Partial proceeds from this show also go to support the cultural center.)
