26 Gangsters Arrested in 2 Weeks

A countywide crime sweep yielded 43 arrests, including 26 of people with gang affiliations.

"Operation Take Back," an anti-violence effort in Santa Cruz County, netted 43 arrests over a two-week span, authorities said.

In response to a wave of violent crime in the region, the Santa Cruz County Law Enforcement Chiefs Association authorized the operation on Feb. 21, calling on local police agencies to supplement the Santa Cruz County Gang Task Force.

The operation was set to launch on Feb. 27, and despite the fatal shooting of two Santa Cruz police officers on Feb. 26, the operation was launched as scheduled, gang task force officials said.

Personnel conducting Operation Take Back included police officers from Watsonville, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and Capitola, and members of the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team, Santa Cruz Probation Department, and the California Highway Patrol.

Of the 43 arrests made during the 14-day operation, 27 were for felonies and 16 for misdemeanors, according to the gang task force. Twelve of those arrested were on parole, and 26 had gang associations.

Eight of the arrests were of juveniles, all with gang associations, task force officials said.

Three of the juveniles were arrested in connection with the recent stabbing murder of 20-year-old Felipe Reyes in Watsonville.

Another juvenile and an adult with gang affiliations were arrested while attempting to flee the scene of a violent gang assault of a non-gang-involved victim on Feb. 28 in front of a Valero gas station in Watsonville, according to the task force.

Over the course of the operation, officers seized 10 weapons — three firearms, five illegal knives and two blunt weapons.

Six search warrants were served, including three in relation to the Reyes murder and one that resulted in the seizure of two guns and the arrest of a drug trafficker, task force officials said.

This is a tried method. Maybe it is time we try community organizing instead of community demonizing?
Denise March 21, 2013 at 02:19 pm
^ agreed

I see Watsonville heading the way of Salinas. Soon innocent people and their families will be dodging bullets. We need to do all we can to stop gang violence now and not after it has completely taken over.

Gangsters are a product of amerikkka.
Laura March 21, 2013 at 02:26 pm
@Marie I think you are absolutely right. We definitely don't want to become Salinas.
Forest G March 21, 2013 at 02:39 pm
Patrick that's a nice hippy-dippy idea but its been tried and it does not work. Thugs need to be disposed of. Time to take back Watsonville.
Forest G March 21, 2013 at 02:42 pm
I see 14 yo kids driving around flashing guns and drinking beer. Maybe we have passed the tipping point towed being another Salinas. It's time for law enforcement to step on the necks if these gang bangers.
Denise March 21, 2013 at 02:46 pm
Yes, the blight has already spread. It's all over Watsonville heading into Aptos and Santa Cruz. It's headed out the other way in Hollister and toward Gilroy. Drastic and extreme measures need to be taken to get it under control (if that's possible).
Laura March 21, 2013 at 02:47 pm
I would feel bad about demonizing someone for something they could not help. Being and living a gangster life is a personal choice you make. I stand by my comment and would love to see them shot on the spot because frankly they would not hesitate to do it to you or your loved ones.
Laura March 21, 2013 at 02:54 pm
So frustrating to hear all of this. I am in the process of wanting to move back to Watsonville and I hate the way my hometown is heading in the direction of every other town. What happened to all the brave people I grew up around?
Jon March 23, 2013 at 12:47 pm
Gangs and thugs will always be there no matter the race or community . There is always going to be bad people in the world, your Dreams of a perfect watsonville is never going to happen. No bad guys= no law enforcement= a lot of ex-cops on power trips looking for work.
I have grown up in watsonville and have never been around gangs or anything like that and have never been intimidated by gangs. But I have been intimidated by watsonville police department multiple times as a young teen(10-18) . The WPD is a criminal org in itself . Cops can be just as crooked as the gangster believe it or not.( and If you don't believe, your just scared to relize the truth) I don't mean that to all cops. I honor a good honest police officer with integrity and respect for one another.

You all have to remember those "gangsters" have families. They are sons, fathers, brothers, husbands. And everyone messes up and does wrongs..everyone makes mistakes and absolutely none of you guys can judge them..have you done no wrongs?? A sin is a sin in Gods eyes. I'm not saying they shouldn't serve time for the mistakes they made. But shooting them on the spot?? That's defiantly uncalled for! What if they were your family, your blood, would you be saying the same then?? Life is a beautiful thing cause it gives you second, third, fourth and so on chances..everyone should be able to have the opertunity to change for the better.
Brenda Costly March 26, 2013 at 04:28 am
Ok, ok, no shooting. They could be driven down to the plaza and hung. Then tell their familys to get out of town and never return. It's time to rid this town of this slime and the families that created them.
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 09:49 am
Most the time the families have absolutely nothing to do with them becoming gangsters they don't even know they are!! You should be ashamed of yourself for saying that.
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 09:54 am
All the hardworking people who work in the fields for you snobby ass white folks. Pickin the veggies and fruit on your damn table would be gone..then who would do the jobs that no one else in Santa Cruz Watsonville area would wanna do?? They are the back bone of our little economy that we have. And I am white!! But I know how it is I work in the berry field!! That is hard ass labor!!
Susan O'Day March 26, 2013 at 10:52 am
Had our laws been stricter and Salinas police taken care of the gang violence when it first began, it wouldn't be nearly as bad as it is now..and yes, now it's taken to all the cities around us. It's gotten out of hand and there's no way to stop it. Jails are full ...what do they do now?.
Susan O'Day March 26, 2013 at 10:57 am
Jessica. Shooting a gangster on the spot is not something our officers do although in order to save them selves or protect an innocent person, in my opinion, they should. Yes, life is a beautiful thing and it does give you many chances...How many chances does a good person need to turn their lives around..some learn the first time..the bad ones know that if they screw up the judicial system will keep giving them chances...until they kill someone. I would think most people would learn when they make a mistake and not take advantage of second, third, fourth and so on chances.
Susan O'Day March 26, 2013 at 11:00 am
How do you know that most families have absolutely nothing to do with their children becoming gangsters? Or that they don't even know they are? How could you possibly know that?
Susan O'Day March 26, 2013 at 11:03 am
Jessica. When I was a kid I worked in the berry field too. I started when I was 10 to help feed our family like my brothers and sisters and yes it is hard ass labor. I am also white! The people that work in the fields are good people and work long hours, they have children they are trying to support..no one disputes they are good people.
Laura March 26, 2013 at 11:23 am
@jessica this is not a racial thing. You do not need to be calling out people based on their race. Call them out for their actions not their race! That is just ignorant. I am Mexican and I say shoot them on the spot. You have obviously not lost anybody to violence. Have we forgotten about those children hunted down and shot like animals at the nopal bakery? About all these young men either stabbed or shot to death this year? I'm sure if that was your kin you would not feel like giving gangsters a second chance.
@ Susan I apologize for the name calling.
Denise March 26, 2013 at 11:34 am
The innocent lost to the gangs violence do not get a second chance. That's why a lot of people would like to see them shot on the spot. Then we wouldn't have to worry about losing more innocent lives to the gangs. I know I'd rather the innocent lost got their second chance than to give one of the gang members a second chance. They blew it by joining up and participating.
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 11:41 am
What I'm Tryna get at is "gangsters" families are the ones working in the feilds. Someone put "get there Families out of here" thats why i had said that. And yes it is very racial cops will pull you over in Watsonville if "you look suspicious" that means dressing a sort of way, being Mexican. Even if they are not involved in gangs. Do we not have a right to dress how we want anymore.?? And yes I have had friends get killed, I grew up in this era... But I do not hold grudges. And what you are guys are saying is very ignorant. I know people who would be considered "gangsters" in your eyes. And they just got mixed up with the wrong crowd. They are the nicest and will always be there for you.. That's why they have things like "home boy industries" for the ones who know they did wrong and want to change. Like I said before everyone has the right for a second chance
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 11:46 am
And most of the ones who are the victims (defiantly not all) are involved in the opposite gang in some way. Lets be real. So those victims are gangsters also..also the cops are quick to say crimes are "gang related" when they do not have proof. Like I said before judging someone on there looks is no proof what so ever. And most the cops are just has bad as the people they taking to jail.
Denise March 26, 2013 at 11:49 am
I get what you're saying, but not "everyone" gets a second chance is my point. The innocent victims. Not all gansters families work in the fields. I don't believe that for a second. To me, a ganster is one who harrasses others, steals and kills. They may be nice people in the eyes of those who love them, but they are dangerous to others. I think everyone is just frustrated that the problem is getting worse and they're afraid for their loved ones, no matter who they are. It's a horrible problem with no easy solution. This is a sounding board...
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 11:54 am
I know a lot of there families do. Obviously you don't go to watsonville that often or know families that would fall into that category..all I'm saying is you guys are categorizing gangsters and there not all the same.
Denise March 26, 2013 at 12:02 pm
Well, you're wrong about that (if you're referring to me). I live here. I know (and love) plenty of families that "fall into that catagory" and I don't "categorize" someone as a gangster by the way they look. It's the way they act...
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 12:13 pm
Well I do to. And all the families I know who work in feilds (which is a lot) have sons who would be considered gangsters. Maybe uou dont realize they are cause you do love them..(just a Thought,i dont know you and dont mean no distespect) A lot of them are convicted for crimes they didn't even do but they can't say anything or they would be killed. If you don't personally know them, and your going after what a police report and mugshots tell you then yes your categorizing them on how they look.
Susan O'Day March 26, 2013 at 12:15 pm
YEP!
Laura March 26, 2013 at 12:50 pm
I know people who are "gangsters" who chose the lifestyle... Key word chose. I can even say I love them but their choice should not affect a whole community. Get rid of the plague no matter how hurt some will be including myself to give this younger generation a chance to accomplish what they may without bring shot like dogs in the street.
Jessica March 26, 2013 at 04:25 pm
So Laura you don't want the younger generation to be shot like dogs in the street, but you wanted that to happen to the gangsters?? This is going no where I just thought it was so wrong what you guys were saying. Sorry if I was rude to anyone on here..didn't mean to be. Just Tryna get my point across

I'd like to have more info about this. I'm thinking of "bundling" my telephone land line,Read More internet, and HGTV with Charter, BUT if they practice censorhsip, I might reconsider. Any more info would be appreciated...what websites are being blocked?
Butch Cole June 16, 2013 at 01:32 am
I'd like more information also..I have Charter now and can't remember getting notification that theyRead More are blocking sites.
Earl Pickles June 16, 2013 at 10:40 pm
Doubtful that notification would be given. Sites that are most troublesome for Charter are thoseRead More available for downloading copyrighted material. This is not to say that Charter is a bad ISP for it is a relative fast, moderately priced, reliable service in this area. I would suggest however that you do not lease the required equipment from them but purchase your own. If you are interested in finding out more about Charter and other ISPs blocking sites, information is available on the Internet.

From emergency dispatchers: the white four-door sedan had flames coming from the engine compartment.Read More It was on the off-ramp from southbound Highway 1 near Rampart. The car was fully engulfed and the flames spread into the surrounding vegetation a bit, but firefighters only needed a couple of minutes to knock down the fire.
Watsonville Police Traffic Officers Jason Koehler and Julio Romero

Congrats to these two Officers. I already knew that Officer Romero had excellent riding skills afterRead More he went after a hit-and-run driver who totaled my car in my own driveway a few years ago. Way to go WPD!
