UPDATED Crash Claims Freedom Man

The fatal accident happened Saturday morning in North Monterey County.

UPDATED, Monday, Dec. 19: The teenage driver who reportedly caused a head-on fatal crash south of Watsonville on Saturday was intoxicated at the time, KSBW Action News 8 reported

George Diaz Taylor was arrested on suspicion of DUI, the California Highway Patrol told the TV station.

George Petroutsas, 42, of Freedom was in the car hit by Taylor. He died at the scene and his passenger, a 51-year-old woman, suffered moderate injuries.

Original story, Satruday, Dec. 17: A Freedom man died and two other people were injured in a head-on crash Saturday morning on Hall Road, east of Elkhorn Road, multiple news agencies reported.

The collision happened around 8:15 a.m. when a young man from Salinas allowed his car to cross into oncoming traffic, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported. The man was 18 years old and heading west.

His car collided with an eastbound Toyota driven by George Petroutsas, KSBW Action News 8 reported. He was 42.

Petroutsas was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene, according to the Sentinel's report from the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the other car and a 16-year-old who was in Petroutsas's vehicle were both flown to trauma centers.

The crash happened about 2.5 miles south of the Santa Cruz-Monterey county line.
