Update: Jail Escapee Surrenders

This is the first escape from the Main Jail since 2003. Earlier this year two women escaped from the Blaine Street Women's Detention Facility and were caught.

Update 2:30 p.m.: Craig Souza was located and arrested early Tuesday afternoon following his break from jail. According to the Sheriff's Office, he called by phone to surrender and was interviewed and booked on escape charges.

Original Report: Santa Cruz Sheriff's Deputies are looking for a 34-year-old man who walked out of the Main Jail Monday evening after being booked for giving a false name to a police officer and probation violation.

Craig Souza, of Santa Cruz, walked to a staff door and was inadvertently let out of the jail at 259 Water St. at 7:02 p.m., according to video records.

Souza was in a seating area inside the jail when he got up and was buzzed through the door by a deputy monitoring the security camera.

Deputies realized he was gone at 7:14 p.m.

Souza's criminal record includes nonviolent drug offenses and theft.

He is 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.

If you have information please call (831) 471-1121 or 9-1-1.

The Sheriff's Department processes more than 12,000 prisoners a year at the jail.  In the last escape, in 2003, two inmates snuck out of the laundry room.

walked out of a detention center and were caught days later.

A ha ha haah!! OMG, you are hilarious!! From the spelling and grammar issues, down to the glossing over of the criminal past and claims of a " responsible person in the community." If I read that correctly, 23 prior arrests and claims that "Mr. Souza is not a criminal," hoo boy, that is funny!! Two things I'll agree with here, Corissa: if he's got a history of 23 arrests, I feel comfortable in labeling ol' Craigee as a criminal, and I bet lots of people agree with me. Second, you are right about Craig making a difference in how I think when I am feeling down about myself: I say "Dang, I sure am glad I am not Craig Souza, getting habitually arrested and having goofus booking photos posted on the Internet!!" See, I feel better already!!

Hey you guys stop the bickering, chuck that wasnt cool to call some one out that way. 23 arrests is a lot but the cops in this area put a label on people quick and they never even give them a chance to do the right thing and for the most part the police take most of these criminals at a young age out here and they are profiled and lives pretty much ran into a hole that the police and the state of california make it almost impossible to crawl out of, not to mention the huge amount of self esteem lost by these people and in some cases the are soo severe it becomes more police harassment and trying to get these people to do something wrong or fall into there lil trap that it makes some of them completely give up on life and even trying cause they feel it is impossible for them to do anything which makes them more turn to drugs alcohol and rebellion.

(cont. from above)..most are a product of what society makes them to be and that's that i see it first hand every day. I most certainly do not agreee with stealing from anyone and it is wrong and the drug thing well theres gotta be better ways to handle that period, but you have to look at this did this person have a violent record was he putting people of the comunity at risk of physical violence or harm in most cases these people with records wouldnt hurt a sole they just had a drug problem. well we need to address these issues different and even if you have 23 prior arrests that most certainly does not mean that you have never been a positive influence in your community or helped someone with a more positive outlook on life or still can be a positive member of any community in the future. sorry i just wanted to give my two sense.Chuck no more cheap shots or dirty laundry airing..Corissa your post made total sense and if he is not a violent or mean person I'm sure with your help and maybe a location change he would be able to live with out any further infractions. have a wonderfull day you two and keep positive thats the only way we can survive together in this world and change this into a better place......
