Update: Man Killed in Drive-by Shooting on Freedom Overpass

The drive-by happened during rush hour.

Update 10 p.m.: A young man was gunned down while walking with a friend across Highway 1 on the Freedom Boulevard overpass during rush hour Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office reported.

The man was 19 or 20 years old and a county resident, according to Sgt. Jim Ross of the Sheriff's Office. His name was not released Wednesday night.

The drive-by happened around 6:10 p.m. when the man and his friend walked from the Bonita Drive side of the highway inland. A gray Honda sedan pulled up alongside them, words were exchanged and the man was shot with a 22-caliber handgun, according to Ross.

"There was a friend with him when he was shot ... we have witnesses," Ross said.

The shooting victim collapsed. His friend and passers-by, including a nurse, tried to save him. They performed CPR before medics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car sped off. Emergency dispatchers made automated calls to homes in the area, hoping to get a lead on on where the car went. Late Wednesday, Ross said he didn't know if any tips had come in.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

"We're still interviewing people," Ross said. ""I don't know what was said or what led up to that."

Ross said the circumstances of the shooting were particularly brazen because of its proximity to the busy highway and Aptos High School, just a few blocks away.

"In a call like this when you have a shooting that just occurred (we worry) is anyone else at risk? You just don't know," Ross said.

Sheriff's deputies pushed through gridlock to get down Highway 1 to the crime scene. Deputies shut down the Freedom Boulevard on and off ramps to investigate. The area reopened just before 10 p.m., as the coroner's van drove off.

Update 7:07 p.m.: The Register-Pajaronian is reporting that the man who was shot on the Freedom Boulevard overpass has died.

The suspect drove away in a green Honda Civic and is described as a "Hispanic male with a dark complexion wearing a blue hat and blue shirt driving with a passenger in his 20s."

According to the Pajaronian, the overpass is closed.

Original Report: One person was injured in a drive-by shooting on the Freedom Boulevard overpass just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, dispatchers have confirmed to Patch.

According to emergency radio traffic, the incident occurred on the southbound side of the bridge and there was a person on the scene attempting CPR on the victim.

Dispatchers said that the vehicle involved fled the area and could not offer a description.

At 6:50 p.m., traffic was backed up between Freedom Boulevard and State Park Drive on southbound Hwy 1.

Stay tuned to Patch as more information on the shooting becomes available.

This is terrible. There was a drive-by in the same area five or six years ago when a group of Watsonville guys heading home from the Santa Cruz bars were chased down on the highway and shot at. A couple people went to prison for that shooting, and no one died (though one man suffered a serious brain injury).
