Elderly Man Hit By Truck, Killed

The man was crossing Main Street when he was struck by a pickup Monday morning; he later died of his injuries.

A 77-year-old pedestrian was killed Monday morning when he was hit by a Dodge Dakota pickup on Main Street, Watsonville police reported.

The crash, reported just after 6 a.m., happened in the southbound lanes of Main Street near Pennsylvania Avenue, police reported.

The man was on the west side of Main Street just south of the intersection when he began to cross Main Street and was hit by the truck, police reported.

The 20-year-old man driving the truck tried to stop but was unable to avoid the collision, police said.

The pedestrian suffered head injuries and trauma to his body, police reported. He was flown to a San Francisco Bay Area trauma center, but later died of his injuries. His name has not been released.

"It does not appear that this collision is the result of a criminal act," Sgt. Brian Ridgway stated in a prepared release.

Ridgway noted that the driver of the truck is cooperating with police and the investigation is continuing.

Investigators in the police department's Traffic Division ask that anyone with information regarding this collision call the Crime Tip line at 768-3544 or the Investigation Bureau at 768-3352.
