UPDATE: Santa Cruz Mountain Fire 90% Contained

Five to seven acres burned, officials report.

A brush fire burning in the Santa Cruz mountains this evening is around 90 percent contained, according to a Cal Fire official.

The fire, reported around 4 p.m. near Croy Ridge and Summit roads in the Mount Madonna area, has consumed around 5 to 7 acres, according to Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke.

Fire crews will remain on the scene through the night and into tomorrow making sure the fire is completely extinguished, Leitzke said.

The fire is being handled by the Santa Clara County division of Cal Fire with assistance from the Santa Cruz division.

A 5-acre fire is burning on the Santa Cruz mountains this afternoon, right on the border between Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, a Cal Fire division chief said.

The fire was reported at about 4 p.m. near Croy Ridge and Summit roads in the Mount Madonna area, Cal Fire Santa Cruz area Division Chief Rich Sampson said.

It is being handled by the Santa Clara County division of Cal Fire with assistance from the Santa Cruz division.

The fire is expected to spread, but it's not clear just how big it could get, Sampson said.
