Gang Shooting Reported on Carey Avenue

The gun violence happened in the middle of the afternoon.

Update at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday

A 30 year old man was shot in the abdomen in broad daylight after a small confrontation erupted into violence in Watsonville on Saturday afternoon, authorities reported.

The shooting was reported at 226 Carey Ave., near a church, around 1:20 p.m. and police Sgt. Mike McKinley said the incident was a gang motivated crime.

Shortly after the shooting there were “lots of gang members in the area,” according to emergency radio traffic.

The suspected shooter used a handgun and fled in a gray car, authorities reported.

The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was flown to Valley Medical Center for treatment, according to emergency radio traffic.

"The detective investigations bureau is currently pursuing leads on the case." said McKinley.

Put every single gang member into one prison and let them kill each other there instead of on the street where they endanger innocent people. Anyone in that is in a gang is up to no good and they are a danger to society.

Great Idea Beverly..I was thnking our servicemen could use them to find land mines instead of of innocent dogs!
deepak cho July 08, 2012 at 03:26 PM
Susan that is just an awful thing to say. I cannot believe anyone could make such an ignorant, abhorrent statement like that. I hate the gang violence as much as anyone but nobody, I nean NOBODY deserves such treatment. You should be absolutely ashamed of yourself.
David H. Perez July 08, 2012 at 04:36 PM
Deepak - NOBODY deserves the violence inflicted upon them by these pieces of human waste called gangsters either. I think Susan has a great idea. It would be a much nobler way for these people to die, giving their life for their country and other service people, rather than killing people on the street and putting innocent lives in danger. Beverly had a great idea too, to lock these cowardly gangsters up together and let them massacre each other. That would also be a great service to the country.

Thank you David! My sentiments exactly!

Great Idea Susan and deepak you should be ashamed for thinking other wise. These cocharoches should be fumigated .They are endangering innocent lives.

Is there a real solution? We can't be vigilantes, and we can't "just kill them all." What is going on in terms of preventing young people from joining gangs?

luke July 08, 2012 at 09:40 PM
You want to just keep on coddling these pukes ? It really is time for some drastic measures.
luke July 08, 2012 at 09:47 PM
Karina, what GOOD reason would I have to join a gang of murderers and thieves and cowards?

I'm with you Beverly Young!

Just my opinion. They already are killing each other. Only problem is that they are involving other inocent people. Maybe just sending them all to an island and not involving the prison system. Why should we pay for them to be there even if it is killing each other

Gang violence is a community issue we can't ignore. It's an economic problem, a family values problem and, eventually, a public safety problem. There are many positive programs trying to make a difference in Watsonville. Admitting that the whole community is necessary to admit we have these issues, then work together to solve them, is a great big step forward. Check out this effort Sunday to bring the community together with hope: http://watsonville.patch.com/articles/jumbo-sized-portraits-give-watsonville-an-artistic-upgrade

These gangbangers are really a scourge on society in general and their communities in particular. You gangbanger apologists must realize that these gangbanger's victims are usually the poor, weak and defenseless people in their own neighborhoods. Just the other day on Carey Ave. one of my tenants and her 15 & 17 year old daughters returned home after a long day picking strawberries only to find that their home was broken into and all their valuables were stolen. These are the people who can least afford to be ripped off as they can't afford insurance and they have so little. To excuse these cowards behavior because of their upbringing is an offense to the majority of kids who grow up in these neighborhoods and don't become gangbangers. The bottom line is, these losers join gangs because they're too stupid to go to college, too lazy to get a job, and too cowardly to join the military.
Jennifer Squires July 09, 2012 at 06:02 AM
You're right, James. That's why it's also a family values problem. Parents of kids in gangs need to 1. realize what's going on 2. admit the problem (I can't tell you the number of times I've heard "he's not in a gang" when it's quite clear that is a false statement) and 3. intervene before it becomes as serious as what happened to your neighbors.

Seriously?
Jennifer Squires July 10, 2012 at 01:58 AM
Correction from a reader: he was shot in the leg, not the abdomen.
Adrian July 12, 2012 at 06:54 PM
Police need to put these cocharoches away and let them exterminate each other in jail instead of that scum risking the lives of innocent people.
Adrian July 12, 2012 at 06:56 PM

A problem that continues to happen, generation after generation and unfortunately will continue to happen. Poverty, drugs, alcohol, parent neglect, abuse, etc. etc. I don't ever see a solution...like the rest of my community members though, I am sick and tired of these so called "humans" wasting our tax money and resources...Our city, county, state and federal goverments are going BROKE because of all the resources we provide to try and help them out. THEY DON'T CHANGE AND DON'T WANT TO! Look at the programs that are constantly abused by them!! Section 8, food stams, wic, medi-cal, HEAP assistance and all the other numerous HAND OUTS they receive to supposely "HELP" them?!?! While their children grow up and continue to sell drugs, join gangs, threaten, rob and shoot innocent people. Enough is enough. The system is BROKEN and DOES NOT WORK. Take these cowards away and let them execute each other once and for all.
