Gangster 'Doughboy' Convicted of Brutal Jail Attack

Two known, high-ranking gang members extended their violent streak to Santa Cruz County jail in 2011 and both have been convicted since.

District Attorney Bob Lee announced today that, a jury convicted Albert "Doughboy" Martinez of being an active participant in a criminal street gang, possession of a weapon in jail, and assault with a deadly weapon.  

The jury further found that the crimes were committed in association with a criminal street gang.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Aug. 8, 2011 in the Santa Cruz County Jail. On that date, armed gang members Martinez and Jesse Ybarra attacked a fellow inmate. The inmate suffered minor injuries as a result of the attack and has since made a full recovery.

At the time of the attack, Martinez and Ybarra were considered to be high-ranking gang members.

Martinez, 37, will be required to serve 80 percent of his sentence prior to becoming eligible for parole. He is facing over 24 years in prison. Martinez is due back in court on Feb.  A sentencing date has not yet been set.

On Dec. 21, 2012, Ybarra was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for his involvement in the attack.
