Inmate Suicide Victim Identified

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the man who hung himself in jail.

The man who killed himself in Santa Cruz County Jail on Sunday morning has been identified by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office as Bradley Dreher.

The 47-year-old man was found at 11:20 a.m. in his cell after hanging himself. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Dreher was an iron worker living in Soquel.

He had been arrested on Friday night on the felony charge of making threats. He was in a single cell and was given medication at 5 a.m. and checked on again at 10 a.m., where he showed no suspicious behavior, the sheriff's office said.

He was declared dead at 11:40, 20 minutes after he was found unconscious.

Sgt. Patrick Dimick said the sheriff's office will not be releasing a photo of Dreher. However, his mugshot is available for viewing by clicking here.

The suicide is still under investigation. Following county protocols, "multi-agency reviews of the evidence surrounding the incident," is ongoing, Dimick said.

Hi Karin, I am so sorry about your loss. I'm part of an organization focusing on the four deaths that have happened at the county jail since August. We are working to expose the inhumane conditions in the jail and create community support for alternatives. If you are interested in hearing more, please send me an email at: sinbarras@gmail.com
