Late-Night Stabbing Leaves One Seriously Hurt

The attack happened in a Watsonville park on Saturday night.

A 28-year-old man was chased down and stabbed by a group of men in a park late Saturday night in Watsonville, police said Sunday morning.

Police were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. Saturday to in the 1100 block of East Lake Avenue and found the 28-year-old man suffering from a significant wound to his lower abdomen.

The victim and another male had been walking through the park when they encountered a group of eight to ten males in a parking lot near Wagner Street and Vista Montana Drive, police said

Police said the pair and the group exchanged words, and the group of assailants got into a minivan and a compact car and started driving after the two victims.

The group of suspects caught up to the two males near the intersection of East Lake Avenue and Wagner Street, where the group of males got out of their cars and attacked the two victims, police said.

The attackers slashed the 28-year-old man across his lower abdomen; his companion was able to get away.

Police said victim was taken to a trauma center outside of Santa Cruz County where he underwent emergency surgery for life-threatening injuries. Sunday morning, he was listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made. Police have not said what the motive for the attack may have been.
