Maintenance Man Stabbed Going to Work

The attempted robbery happened at the entrance to Monterey Bay Academy early Sunday.

A Monterey Bay Academy maintenance employee on his way to work early Sunday was attacked and stabbed during an attempted robbery, the Sheriff's Office reported.

The worker, 36-year-old Watsonville man, was able to drive himself to the hospital after the assault, according to sheriff's Sgt. Ian Patrick. No arrests were made.

The attempted robbery and subsequent attack happened around 4 a.m. on the 700 block of San Andreas Road, a remote rural stretch that runs through ag land between Highway 1 and the coastline.

"According to him, a Hispanic guy pulled up next to him while he was parked by the entrance to Monterey Bay Academy," Patrick said, recounting the maintenance worker's statement to deputies.

The attacker got out of a white Honda, challenged him and demanded money, then stabbed him and drove away, Patrick said. The maintenance worker said he didn't have any cash on him.

He also believed the assault was gang-motivated because the attacker was wearing red, "but that’s conjecture on the victim’s part," Patrick added.

Detectives are investigating the attack.
