Police in Watsonville Saturday night were piecing together the details of a young man found mortally wounded in a vehicle, a pistol lying in his lap.
"We're exploring all options," Watsonville police Sgt. Morgan Chappell told Patch.
"Initially it was considered a suicide."
Firefighters were called to Freedom Boulevard, near Airport Boulevard, about 12:40 p.m., according to Watsonville police Sgt. Henry Robles.
A person had called emergency dispatchers to report someone possibly having a medical event, the car in which he was sitting stopped in a lane of Freedom Boulevard, Watsonville police Sgt. Morgan Chappell told Patch.
The man in the vehicle was slumped behind the wheel of a four-door Cadillac sedan just at the intersection with Airport Boulevard, Chappell said in an interview.
He had a gunshot wound to his head, police said.
Medics administered aid to the man -- he was still breathing -- when they spotted the gun in the man's lap and called police, who came to take the weapon, Robles reported.
The man was taken to a local hospital and from there, airlifted to a trauma center in Santa Clara, where he died, police said.
His name was being withheld, pending notification of kin.
The case is under investigation and anyone with information was asked to call investigators at 831-728-3544.
