Man Shot in Leg During Driveby

The Sunday night shooting happened near the Watsonville Police Station.

A man standing in front of a Maple Street home talking to a friend was shot in a driveby Sunday night, Watsonville police reported.

The gunfire erupted around 10:19 p.m. when the man was at a house on the 100 block of the street, less than two blocks from the and not far from the City Plaza, where just hours earlier families had been enjoying the weekend's .

The man was chatting with his friend when a light-colored truck or sport utility vehicle rolled past the house and someone inside opened fire, police said. The shooter appeared to be targeting the two men—ages 35 and 42—in front of the house. One man was hit twice in the upper legs; his friend was unhurt, police said.

Police searched the area and put out an all-points-bulletin through a tri-county area, but did not find the shooter's SUV.

The man who was shot was flown to an out-of-county trauma center for treatment. As of 6 a.m. Monday, police did not know what his condition was.

Police said they have little information to go on because few witnesses have surfaced. Investigators also have not said what the motive for the shooting may have been.
