UPDATE: Four Arrested, One Tased after Walgreens Armed Robbery

After searching two homes, police made four arrests and recovered money stolen from the drug store.

Update 1:23 p.m.: Police have arrested four people they believe to be associated with the armed robbery of Walgreens that occurred at 12:40 a.m. Friday.

Along with the previously-reported arrest of Albert Contreras, 21, police also arrested Earvin Medrano, 19 and two 15-year-olds in Watsonville Friday morning.

Two people that were detained at the scene were released once police were confident that they were not associated with the robbery.

Original Report: Watsonville Police have detained five men and arrested a sixth early Friday in connection with at least one, if not multiple burglaries, Sgt. Eric Taylor said.

At 12:40 a.m., four men entered Walgreens, two with handguns. They went in "takeover style," forced the clerk back, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot, Taylor said.

When officers arrived, a witness told them the men ran behind the Walgreens into a field. They were able to pick up a trail through the field that led to a house on Fuchsia Court, but found only a girl and her grandmother there. Police then heard movement around the corner and saw three men running toward a house on Carnation Drive.

According to Taylor, officers surrounded the house and two men jumped out of a window and attempted to run. A sheriff's deputy then grabbed one of the men, 21-year-old Albert Contreras, but he was able to break away before a sergeant tased and arrested him.

Contreras matched the description of one of the men who robbed Walgreens, and was found to be in possession of a loaded gun and cash.

Four more men then ran out of the house on Carnation Drive and were detained, but not yet arrested, Taylor said.

Officers returned to the house on Fuchsia, and found one more man in the backyard. Taylor said he was also detained.

As of 8:30 a.m., officers had the two houses surrounded and were preparing to do a full-scale search on each.
