Man with Dementia Goes Missing, Found Nearly 30 Hours Later

Carl Maielua of Aptos was last seen walking on Freedom Boulevard on Thursday.

Update from police on Friday evening: Carl Maielua has been found in Santa Cruz.

An Aptos man suffering from dementia went missing Thursday, and police are asking for the public's help in finding him.

Carl Maielua, 61, was seen walking north on Freedom Boulevard near Martinelli Street around 11 a.m. Two hours later, relatives had not heard from him. They reported him missing around 6:25 p.m. Thursday, police reported.

Maielua lives on Townsend Drive in Aptos. Police didn't say why he was in Watsonville or out alone.

Both relatives and police officers have been searching for Maielua without success.

Maielua is Hawaiian, about 5-foot-8 and 220 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. Anyone who sees him should call the non-emergency police dispatch line at 831-471-1151.
