UPDATED Murder Victim Identified

The 21-year-old Watsonville man was fatally stabbed Saturday night.

The man killed when he and his friend were attacked in downtown Watsonville over the weekend has been identified as Brandon Gil, 21, the Coroner's Office reported Monday.

"There have been no arrests in this case and no suspects have been identified," police Lt. David McCartney reported in a prepared statement Monday.

Gil suffered a stab wound to his upper abdomen and was found down in the street near Brennan Street and East Lake Avenue around 10 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

He was taken to Watsonville Community Hospital, where he died, police reported.

Gil's friend, who was stabbed in the lower torso, also went to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to recover.

Police said Gil and his friend had been together earlier in the evening. The attacks have been deemed gang-related, but police have said little about the circumstances leading up to the violence.
