Parolee Caught With Stolen Assault Rifles

Police seized three guns Friday night; Gang Task Force took two from a South County family on Thursday.

Cops found three assault rifles and ammunition in a parolee's car Friday night, Watsonville police reported.

That makes five guns taken out of the hands of convicted felons in South County in two days.

Gregorio Reyes Carranza, 41, was at a home on the 200 block of Green Meadow Drive around 10 p.m. Friday when officers came across him. Police said Cararanza, who lives on East Beach Street, was wanted for a parole violation.

Officers searched his car and found a SKS assault rifle and two Tech 9 assault rifles. The serial number was scratched off one of the Tech 9s; the other had been stolen from Redwood City, according to police.

Carranza was arrested on suspicion of being a felon possessing weapons, possessing stolen property and a parole violation.

The gun seizure came a day after agents on the county's Gang Task Force found two handguns in a home on Arista Court.

On Thursday, the Gang Task Force, Watsonville police and sheriff's deputies went to the house for a probation search—a 17-year-old who lives there is on probation—and discovered the mother of the teen had a concealed handgun, according to Mario Sulay, commander of the Gang Task Force.

The gun had been stolen in 2007, and the mother, 34-year-old Sandra Gonzalez, is a convicted felon, so she's forbidden from owning guns, Sulay reported. Her live-in boyfriend, Alberto Silva, 25, is also a convicted felon.

The cops came back with a search warrant for the house and reportedly found a second, loaded handgun in a dresser drawer. Sulay said anyone in the house, including Gonzalez's teenage daughter, could access the gun.

There also were a lot of gang-related items in the house. Sulay said it appeared the gang influence was affecting Gonzalez's daughter.

Gonzalez and Silva both were arrested on suspicion of being felons possessing guns, gang participation, possessing stolen property and child endangerment, Sulay reported.
