Police Blotter: Man Attacked in Alley, Gravely Hurt

Police looking for leads in Sunday afternoon stabbing. Officers also arrest suspect in unrelated car theft.

A 19-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was attacked in broad daylight Sunday, Watsonville police reported.

The teen was found bleeding in Stoesser's Alley, behind the 300 block of Main Street, just after 1 p.m., police said. He had been stabbed several times but refused to tell police anything about his attack.

But officers followed the blood trail and determined the teen was attacked in the same alley, but behind 35 W. Beach St., police said.

The teen was flown to an out-of-county trauma center for treatment. Police said his injuries were serious.

Police ask anyone with information about the attack call the Investigations Bureau at 831-768-3350.

In an unrelated case Friday, police arrested a man suspected of stealing a red Honda Accord from Santa Cruz, switching its plates to a set of stolen license plates, and possessing methamphetamine and stolen property.

The case started when an officer spotted the vehicle around 8:55 pm. and ran its plates but lost sight of the car before he was able to stop it, police reported. Around 11 p.m., another officer saw the same car parked at on Silverleaf Drive.

The driver, Joseph Perry Bertao, was staying at the motel, police said. Officers surrounded the room and forced their way in after Bertao allegedly refused to open the door.

Police said they found the keys to the stolen Accord, methamphetamine and items reported stolen in a car burglary about an hour earlier—women's makeup, tools and paperwork—in Bertao's room.

Midnight—A thief stole the side molding off a vehicle and keyed it on the 100 block of Riverside Drive.

Saturday, Feb. 26

12:55 p.m.—A vandal tagged the fence four times on a vacant lot. The vandalism happened on the 1000 block of East Lake Avenue.

2:34 p.m.—A vehicle parked on the 300 block of East Lake Avenue was scratched and the front bumper burned. The key lock also was broken.

5:41 p.m.—Juan "Rocke" Humberto Hernandez, 25, was arrested for allegedly violating his probation by tagging under a bridge on Green Valley Road at Thicket Avenue.

6:07 p.m.—Angel Sebastian Sanchez, 20, was arrested at home on the 100 block of Carey Avenue for a misdemeanor warrant.

8:08 p.m.—Police investigated a traffic accident on Main and West Peck streets.

11:37 p.m.—Javier Mendoza-Garcia, 29, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and not having a driver's license on East Front and Union streets.

Friday, Feb. 25

12:36 a.m.—John Andrew Pena, 33, was arrested for being drunk in public on the 1200 block of Main Street.

2:02 p.m.—An iPod was stolen from a locked classroom at on the 100 block of Alta Vista Avenue.

3:48 p.m.—A burglar stole jewelry from a house on the 100 block of Airport Boulevard.

4:24 p.m.—Miguel Cervantes, 27, was arrested at Walker and West Beach streets for allegedly violating his parole. He was booked into county jail.

6:53 p.m.—Jeffery Friesell was arrested for warrants on the 1700 block of Freedom Boulevard.

9:36 p.m.—Oscar Bueno allegedly had marijuana on Bridge and Beck streets. He got a ticket.

9:38 p.m.—A 16-year-old boy was arrested for a warrant on East Lake Avenue and Lincoln Street. He was taken to juvenile hall.

10:17 p.m.—Jacquiline Rea Marks, 60, was cited for a warrant. Police contacted her on the 900 block of Main Street when they were investigating a disturbance.

Thursday, Feb. 24

4:03 a.m.—A teen was arrested on Airport Boulevard and Holm Road for allegedly having spray paint and other tagging material.

1:52 p.m.—Robert Castillo, 41, was cited for allegedly having marijuana in the . Isreal Garibay was cited for the same offense, also in the plaza, around 7:45 p.m.

5:01 p.m.—Police got a warrant for a teenager suspected of tagging on the 100 block of Second Street.
