Police Blotter: No Sign of Missing Fisherman

Two 'Fugitives' arrested this week, Sheriff's Office reports.

has still not been found, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said Wednesday.

The Coast Guard suspended its search for 42-year-old Jess Lopez on Tuesday evening after scouring the waters for him from around 7 a.m. until just after sunset.

Lopez is believed to have gone overboard sometime around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Coast Guard Station Monterey Executive Officer John Suckow said.

The man's shipmates said they had not seen Lopez since their boat, the Elaine, was about 12 miles off the coast of Moss Landing, Coast Guard officials said.

The Coast Guard sent two 87-foot cutters, two 47-foot lifeboats and one helicopter to search for Lopez, but he was not found. Three other fisherman on board the Elaine assisted in the search, Suckow said.

Although Lopez was reportedly dressed in bright orange rain gear, which would have made him more visible to search parties, he is not thought to have been wearing a flotation device or anything that would protect him from hypothermia, Suckow said.

1:11 a.m.—A man asleep in someone else's vehicle on the 100 block of East Front Street got a ticket for trespassing.

Tuesday, April 3

12:45 a.m.—A 37-year-old woman found sleeping in another person's vehicle was ticketed for trespassing on the 100 block of East Front Street.

8:15 a.m.—A thief burglarized a vehicle parked on the 100 block of Holm Road by breaking the passenger window. The stereo was stolen.

9:47 a.m.—Officers handled an ongoing vehicle theft and employee embezzlement investigation on the 1700 block of Freedom Boulevard.

3:48 p.m.—An assailant punched a 42-year-old man in the head on Main Street, then ran into Ramsay Park. The injured man was taken to Watsonville Community Hospital for treatment but didn't want to press charges.

4:06 p.m.—A thief stole a woman's wallet from her purse on the 1800 block of Main Street. Later, her credit cards were used in Moss Landing, Salinas and Castroville.

7:09 p.m.—Two relatives in a disagreement over the care of their grandfather got into a fight on the 700 block of Heather Court. One pushed the other and the woman who fell to the floor wanted to press charges.

9:32 p.m.—A 35-year-old man was arrested for DUI on Walker Street and West Beach Avenue.

8 a.m.—A car was burglarized on the 2400 block of East Lake Avenue.

'Fugitive Friday' Arrests

One of the county's "most wanted", Michelle Gilchrist, was arrested at the Watsonville police station at 8:10 p.m. Monday.  and was wanted for forgery and ID theft.

Justin Paul Gorman was arrested at 7:43 p.m. Tuesday.
