Police Blotter: Stabbing, Shooting Reported in Same Neighborhood

The violence happened two blocks and 90 minutes apart.

Two violent incidents, both likely gang-related, happened in a 90-minute period on Carey Avenue late Tuesday and early Wednesday, Watsonville police reported.

First, a 37-year-old man was walking home on Carey near Green Valley Road when five young men piled out of a white van and jumped him around 11:40 p.m., police reported.

He told police the group asked if he was a Sureno gang member, and he responded that he wasn't, but the group attacked him and stabbed him several times in the upper torso, police reported.

The man ran down Green Valley Road to Loma Prieta Avenue until he got to a friend's house near Airport Boulevard and Roache Road. There, he changed his bloody shirt and walked to the emergency room at Watsonville Community Hospital, police reported.

The man told officers he didn't know his friend's name, address or phone number. Police searched but didn't find the attackers or any witnesses.

Then, just after 1 a.m., a gunman fired shots at a home at the corner of Carey and Hillside avenues as the residents slept inside, police reported.

No one was hurt, and no arrests have been made.

The residents told police they heard loud pops and tires screeching. They found a bullet hole in a bedroom window and the adjacent wall, police reported.

After the drive-by, investigators suspect the car involved headed north up Carey toward Airport Boulevard, police reported.

Sgt. Saul Gonzalez said it's possible the stabbing and shooting are related. Detectives ask anyone with information about the stabbing or shooting to call the Investigations Bureau at 768-3350.
