Update: Shootout on Buena Vista

One person was injured in the gun violence early Sunday; no arrests have been made.

Update, 5 p.m. Monday: A prowler fired shots a house north of Watsonville around 4 a.m. Sunday, prompting the residents to return fire. One person was injured, but no arrests have been made as sheriff's detectives are still sorting out what happened, deputy April Skalland said.

The prowler and the resident knew each other, though Skalland didn't have details on how they were acquainted.

“It sounds kind of convoluted and messy as to what actually happened," Skalland said.

The resident called 9-1-1 around 4 a.m. to report a suspicious person prowling around his yard.

“The next thing they knew the person had started shooting in the house,” Skalland said.

Deputies were already on their way when people in the house started shooting back. There was no prowler at the scene when deputies arrived.

The Watsonville hospital emergency room notified the Sheriff's Office of a man with a gunshot wound shortly after that. He had a non life-threatening injury and was driven to a Santa Clara County hospital for treatment, Skalland said.

Deputies are interviewing everyone and are trying to figure out what charges might be applicable.

“It’s not like the public should be worried there’s some random person shooting into people’s houses," Skalland said.

Original story, 11 a.m. Monday: It was the Wild West in rural Watsonville early Sunday.

There was a shootout at a home on Buena Vista Drive that left one person injured and sheriff's detectives trying to sift through what actually occurred, sheriff's deputy April Skalland said.

The shooting happened sometime before 4 a.m. on the 800 block of Buena Vista Drive, which is near Larkin Valley Road and Highway 1, according to a story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

“The people outside the house started shooting inside the house and the people inside shot back," Skalland said.

Deputies were called to Watsonville Community Hospital around 4 a.m. because a shooting victim was in the emergency room, according to the Sentinel. Skalland said it has been erroneously reported that he was arrested; no arrests have been made, she said.

Much remains unclear about the gun violence.

“We don’t have a motive. We don’t know how the people know each other," Skalland said.

This story will be updated.
