Shopper Robbed at Knife Point

The daytime crime happened near downtown Sunday.

A man shopping at the Discount Mall was robbed at knife point on Sunday afternoon, Watsonville police reported.

The crime was reported around 3:10 p.m. The man told officers he had been shopping at the indoor market, at 347 Rodriguez St., when one robber walked up to him, started a casual conversation, then pulled out a knife, police reported.

A second robber approached and the two forced the man out of the store onto East Beach and Rodriguez streets. The robbers told the man to give them all his money, which he did for fear of being stabbed, police said.

The robbers fled in separate directions. One was about 30 years old, heavy build, wearing a blue shirt. The man tried to follow that robber, but lost sight of him on Rodriguez Street near Second Street, police said.

Officers searched the area but didn't find the robbers. Detectives ask that anyone with information about the robbery call the Investigation Bureau at 768-3350 or the Crime Tipline at 768-3544.

Ack! In broad daylight no less - thankfully the victim was unhurt and cooperated with police. These days they rob you AND stab you anyway. Very frustrating ...

And some people get offended when I say I don't go downtown just for this reason.

This DAYLIGHT and the city wants to have the trucks on Peck at night. No thank you. I go downtown for one thing. If there isn't a parking place right there, I don't go in. Plain and simple. I feel very sorry for our Police Chief Manny Solano and his wonderful crew. Their hands are tied and some of it is because of the City Manager. I have a newer vehicle. If I am stopped in a checkpoint for driving under the influence. If I am not under the influence but do not have a drivers license, no registration and no insurance, I have HELL to pay. BUT if a person that is not a citizen is stopped for the same, they are let go. Please explain this to me. If you have a child and he misbehaves, you punish him. If you do not punish him he will continue to do his misdeeds over and over. Get the point?

Well, you don't have to frequent the food trucks. Doesn't mean others won't want to. I stopped by Saturday night, It was super well lit and there were plenty of folks in line. I even spotted Felipe Hernandez. I get what you're saying, but c'mon, how often do things like this actually happen downtown? Once a month? Once every few months? How many thousands of people walk through downtown in the mean time without issue? You don't have to go downtown, but I'm just sayin'... The probability of any one person in Watsonville being robbed within the course of one year is 0.19%. I'm just as upset as anyone about the crime, but I say: lets not let it keep us from enjoying our town. :-)

Palm Ave and the surrounding area, which up until recently seemed to be known as a very safe neighborhood, is probably more dangerous than downtown right now.

Palm and Brewington area has become a shooting war zone right as it gets dark. Most of it comes from the area in the 50-70's on lower Hill where all the gang houses and drug dealers are. I thought Take Back Watsonville was going to do something about it.
HizDesign October 30, 2012 at 02:23 AM
TBW IS doing something about it.
Dogwalker212 October 30, 2012 at 02:54 AM
@hiz - maybe you missed it but TBW is gone. The guy who started it moved to Santa Cruz this morning fearing for his own safety. So, no, TBW is not doing something about it.
HizDesign October 30, 2012 at 03:01 AM
TBW isn't a guy dogwalker.....TBW is a group of people who have begun to stand against crime, while others continue to walk their dogs and look theother way, or hide while posting complaints on the Patch. <smiles>
Dogwalker212 October 30, 2012 at 03:06 AM
Nope, everyone else bailed. It left that Paul guy by himself. I guess it scared the hell out of him because he moved out in the middle of the night, lol. So hiz if you are now TBW then go for it, alone, aginst thousands of gang members. Meantime I'm looking to walk Connie in Aptos.

HizDesign October 30, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Looks like it might be time to close this post to comments as well, Jennifer...the point has been made: the guys who committed the crime WILL be caught, TBW is very much alive & well, we are going to stand against crime in our city regardless of who the crminals are, and regardless of how many parasites swirl through the air:)
The hammer October 30, 2012 at 07:27 PM
Maybe the patch should instead look into where TBW is getting its funding and where the monies are REALY going. David Perez and Cathy P. might not like this. Neither would several people down at city hall. Follow the money.
Hammmmer October 30, 2012 at 08:03 PM
@patch - follow the money. @cathy - still posting on city dole? How was your meeting with with TBW on city time?
