UPDATED: Couple, Two Dogs Dead in Hwy. 129 Crash

The fatal accident happened at Lakeview Drive around 3:30 p.m.

Updated, 3 p.m. Thursday: No confirmation yet on the crash victims' identities. The coroner was still trying to reach some of the woman's relatives, according to the Sheriff's Office. Their names likely will be released Friday.

Original story, 6 p.m. Wednesday: Two people died when the sedan they were in collided head-on with a semi truck on Highway 129 east of Watsonville on Wednesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported on its website.

The white Dodge Neon and a white big rig towing a trailer crashed near Lakeview Drive about 3:25 p.m. It was either a head-on or broadside collision, the CHP reported.

The CHP shut down the highway to clear the crash.

The victims were an elderly Aromas couple, according to KION Central Coast News. An 84-year-old man was driving; his passenger was a 73-year-old woman, the TV station reported.

CHP officer Hugh Holden told the Santa Cruz Sentinel the car was traveling east on the highway when it stopped to turn onto Lakeview. It turned in front of the westbound truck and was broadsided. The Aromas couple and two dogs in their car were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the big rig was not hurt.
