UPDATED Man Crashes into Tree, Dies

The accident happened near Prunedale late Monday night, the CHP reported.

Updated, 3:45 p.m. Wednesday: The man killed in a solo crash near Prunedale late Monday was David Diaz, a 24-year-old Freedom man, the California Highway Patrol reported to the San Jose Mercury News.

No further information about the crash, on San Miguel Canyon Road near Strawberry Road, was released.

Original story, 1:25 p.m. Tuesday: A Watsonville man died Monday night in a single-vehicle crash in North Monterey County, the California Highway Patrol reported to several media agencies.

KION Central Coast News reported the accident happened around 10:30 p.m. when the 27-year-old man was driving on San Miguel Canyon Road north of Strawberry Road, near Prunedale.

His 2006 GMC pickup veered off the road, crashing into a tree and a fence, the Salinas Californian reported.

The crash remains under investigation and the man's name has not been released.
