Two armed robbers attempted to rob a popular Airport Boulevard taqueria Tuesday morning, but the clerk fought them off and refused to hand over any cash, Watsonville police reported.
The men, both wearing masks and brandishing handguns, walked into Fidel's Mexican food at 301 Airport Blvd. around 7 a.m. One punched the clerk in the face and ordered him to open the cash register, police said.
The clerk refused and the robbers turned to leave. One fired two bullets into the ceiling as he fled the restaurant, police said. They were last seen running south on Airport Road.
No one was hit by the gunfire. The clerk suffered minor injuries from being hit, police said.
The robbers were described as Latino men wearing dark clothing and masks. Police ask anyone with information about the attempted holdup call the Investigations Bureau at 831-768-3352 or the Crime Tip Line at 831-768-3544.
