5 Things to Know About Watsonville: Sept. 14

A house caught fire, better cell phone service is coming and Watsonville gets kudos for being a successful city.

Verizon customers, you phones should work better Thursday than ever before.

More Verizon Wireless customers in Santa Cruz County can take advantage of Verizon Wireless' 4G Long Term Evolution network, which allows them to share music and photos, surf the Web and download files up to 10 times faster than before, the company said in a press release this week.

The changes go live Thursday.

Fire gutted a Corralitos home midday Wednesday, KSBW Action News 8 reported.

The blaze started about 12:30 p.m. at a home on 200 block of Browns Valley Road, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported. It tore through half of the home and filled the rest with smoke.

No one was hurt. CalFire firefighters and other fire crews controlled the blaze in aobut an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Thursday is the kickoff to Latino Hertiage Month, though Watsonville celebrated last weekend with a street party in the Watsonville City Plaza.

The 22nd annual event melds American and Mexican culture. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported hundreds of people came out to celebrate.

Watsonville got a high-five from "Strong Cities | Strong State," a campaign to showcase California cities’ success stories, this month. 

The project highlighted Callaghan Park, the Struve Slough Bridge, the water recycling project, , the city plaza and the Riverside Mobile Home Park renovation project.
