Alejo Celebrates Native American Influence in California

The following was announced by the office of Luis Alejo on Wednesday morning:

Assemblymember Luis Alejo (whose 30th District includes Watsonville) has introduced ACR 35, which pays homage to California Native Americans. This measure seeks to build upon a similar resolution that Alejo introduced during the 2011-12 Legislative Session by recognizing every September as California Native American Heritage Month.

“Native Americans have displayed perseverance throughout the history of our nation,” said Alejo. “In spite of many difficulties, California Native Americans have preserved their rich heritage and become an integral part of our state’s culture.”

ACR 35 highlights the fact that California Native Americans have made vital contributions to the strength and diversity of our society despite tremendous historical hardships. Moreover, this measure gives mention to some of the notable contributions of California Native Americans. For example, California tribal governments employ more than 52,000 citizens and contribute approximately $7.5 billion to our shared economy. In addition, ACR 35 encourages Californians to participate in appropriate observances that celebrate and commemorate California Native Americans and their contributions to our state.

“California is home to the largest population of Native Americans in the country,” said Alejo. “Recognizing them as a symbol of hope and courage is just one way our state can illustrate its appreciation.”

ACR 35 must remain in print for 30 days before it can be heard in an Assembly Policy Committee. The full text of the resolution can be found here.
